when i was younger, christmas mornings were bright, kodak-yellow, and fuzzy warm. the house would be full of gifts from santa and the aroma of steaming hot cocoa would fill the dining room.

that was ages ago. a distant memory.

perhaps it all started when i discovered that santa wasn’t real. that there was really no big guy in red who’d sneak into my room to fill my stockings with alpine white and snickers. or maybe it started when i kept hearing my aunt compare her kids with me during reunions. that her kids would be more successful because they could speak chinese and i can’t. or could it be the little carolers who seemed to call out “naniningil po” rather than “namamasko po”? perhaps the gifts that i received over the past years did it. generic gifts that are actually hand-me-downs. little plastic figurines that have no use at all. or gifts that were given in massive amounts, like pamphlets during elections.

in my opinion, christmas is an abused season. big companies use it as part of their marketing strategy, to sell left-over stocks, to make money out of trash. some people use it as an opportunity to feign sincerity or affection or to kiss ass by giving gifts.

we all know that christmas is a time of joy. but why are there more people who commit suicide during this season? more people who have nervous breakdowns. and have you noticed that more people are robbed during the ‘ber months?

these are just some of the things that bother me every christmas season. call it bitterness. call it a disorder. call it whatever you want. this is how i’ve seen christmas.

maybe this year things would change. maybe this year the same old kodak-yellow, fuzzy warm morning would welcome me again on christmas day. maybe this year i would experience its magic like i used to when i was a little girl. maybe this year i would forget that i ever was a scrooge.
